about John M Ballenger

I grew up in Jackson, Ohio which is a part of the North Central Appalachian region. I’ve been married to my wife, Jillaine, for almost 25 years and have two children. The rationale for the title of this blog, What Work Is, can be found in the original post.

I am an Assistant Professor of English at Mount Vernon Nazarene University in Mount Vernon, Ohio. I’m also an ordained minister in the Church of the Nazarene and served as a pastor for about 10 years before returning to higher education.

In 2011 I received my Masters of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Ashland University and have had writing appear (or appearing soon) in publications such as Appalachian Heritage, The Cresset, New Ohio Review, Rock & Sling, Relief Journal, among others.

Quotes Until I Think More About The About Page

“The mercy of the world is you don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Jayber Crow

“It all means more than I can tell you. So you must not judge what I know by what I find words for.”

John Ames, Gilead

“When there is so much to be known, when there are so many fields of knowledge in which the same words are used with different meanings, when everyone knows a little about a great many things, it becomes increasingly difficult for anyone to know whether he knows what he is talking about or not.”

T.S. Eliot
